| Best Way to Teach English Grammar The latest effective research-based reading textbooks teach comprehension as a skill of the reader, but comprehension depends equally on the quality of the writing. Good nonfiction and most good fiction start with good grammar. The reader does not need to know technical grammar; grammar is the responsibility of the writer. Traditional phonics is designed to TEACH READING. Literacy program researchers and teachers consider writing and its accompanying grammar to be secondary. The way in which teachers now teach writing is an example of how standards-based curriculum impact teachers. Writing is primarily a group project in which self-expression is emphasized. Grammar is considered a restraint on expression. The opposite is true. The best way to teach English grammar is not as rigid rules. In fact grammar gives writers great latitude in emphasis and emotion while giving clarity to the text for the reader. The parts of speech are mobile and interchangeable, one part often acting as if it were another. Sentences often contain phrases or clauses that act as a single part of speech. Grammar is not static; it slowly but constantly changes what is considered correct usage. The writer uses grammar like a symphony conductor uses the orchestra. The education of children in home school should include grammar help, and the best way to teach English grammar is as a course with coverage of, and reference to, multiple parts of speech. Good grammar helps acceptance into higher education, and homeschooled children can efficiently acquire good grammar through this book. Grammar as a course is considered a necessity for ESL students. Copious grammar help is offered by journals on teaching grammar to English language learners for whom English is a second language.
